Join us in discovering the hidden wonders of these temporary seasonal ponds. We'll find out what makes them so special, and why they are essential to the survival of many wildlife populations. We’ll take a short walk through the woods to visit one of our pools where we will search for a variety of tiny creatures. The vernal pool is located off the trail, so we will be walking through brambles and muddy areas. Please wear closed-toed shoes and long pants to protect your feet and legs. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Registration Required: Space is limited due to the sensitive nature of this habitat. To register, please email us at powhatan@dcr.virginia.gov or call (804) 598-7148 from 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. daily. If you later find you are unable to attend, please contact us so we can free up your space.

This program is conducted in accordance with Virginia law; park staff and volunteers possess the proper permits and training to collect and briefly handle wildlife.

About Earth Day

In celebration of Earth Day on April 22, Virginia State Parks offers a range of special events and activities highlighting the importance of conservation and sustainability. Visitors are invited to participate in educational programs, guided nature walks, wildlife observation, tree plantings and service projects to help preserve the beauty and biodiversity of the state’s 43 parks.
