Let’s show off how amazing our parks can be for wildlife this spring!
The City Nature Challenge is an international bio-blitz event that is held each spring, typically in the last week of April. During this event, participants make observations within a geo-fenced region using iNaturalist during the 4-day challenge window. Results and contributions are then rolled up automatically and neatly packaged into an online dashboard.
How can you participate?
Visit New River Trail State Park anytime during April 25-28th and document the species you have observed. Send any pictures of you contributing to citizen science along NRT to Chief Ranger Erin Pitts at erin.pitts@dcr.virginia.gov so she can share to our Facebook :)

About Earth Day
In celebration of Earth Day on April 22, Virginia State Parks offers a range of special events and activities highlighting the importance of conservation and sustainability. Visitors are invited to participate in educational programs, guided nature walks, wildlife observation, tree plantings and service projects to help preserve the beauty and biodiversity of the state’s 43 parks.
