Join special guest Karyn Reid, the Floodplain Program Planner for Virginia's Department of Conservation and Recreation, as she shares her in-depth knowledge about Virginia's watersheds shows a demo watershed floodplain model.
Karyn will be using a model and presenting topics such as: types of flooding we see in Virginia, how different land uses like parking lots, storm water retention ponds, and wetlands impact our watersheds’ ability to control flooding. She also advise on practical things that people can or should do before, during and after a flood.
Did you know that the James River is the largest tributary to the Chesapeake Bay? This means that all of the water running by the park flows all the way into the bay, and from there into the ocean. Powhatan State Park sits within the Chesapeake Bay watershed, a land area of over 64,000 square miles that drains its waters into the Chesapeake Bay.
About Clean the Bay Day
Every June, Virginia State Parks participates in the Chesapeake Bay Foundation’s Clean the Bay Day, an event dedicated to protecting and preserving the Chesapeake Bay watershed. Park visitors are invited to join a clean-up to help remove litter, debris and pollution from rivers, streams and shorelines that feed into the Bay, contributing to the health of the Bay’s ecosystem and ensuring cleaner water and safer habitats for wildlife.
