When

Sept. 19, 2025. 8:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.

Join a ranger on a hike along the world-famous Appalachian Trail to the highest peak in Virginia: Mount Rogers. The hike covers approximately nine miles round trip and is considered moderate, though some sections have rocky terrain. The elevation gain will be ~900 feet over 4.5 miles. See incredible views from Wilburn Ridge, travel through the globally rare spruce-fir forest, and possibly encounter several animals found in Grayson County. You never know what you may find along the trail!

Meet the ranger at Massie Gap parking near the gravel parking circle. Bring at least two liters of water, a snack (and/or lunch), and wear proper closed-toe footwear. This hike is moderate to difficult with lots of rocks.

This hike is limited to 10 participants, so pre-registration is required. Register by emailing graysonhighlands@dcr.virginia.gov with the names and contact information of those in your party and an emergency contact, or call the Park Office at 276-579-7092. No registration fee is required, however standard parking fees still apply.
