Through trail, stone, and timber, the CCC carved a legacy that still shapes Douthat today.
Join us at the historic Douthat Shelter—built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s—for a campfire program that brings history to life. Gather around the fire as we explore the stories of the young men who built the park during the Great Depression, known as the “CCC boys.”
We’ll explore how Douthat State Park came to be—not just through tools and timber, but through the lives of the young men who built it. Using original CCC newsletters, we’ll share firsthand stories that reveal what daily life was like for the “CCC boys” who lived and worked here during the 1930s. From humorous camp moments to reflections on hard work and camaraderie, these voices from the past offer a powerful glimpse into the people behind the park’s foundations.
This program is perfect for history lovers, families, and anyone curious about the roots of Virginia’s state parks. And yes—there will be s’mores.
Parks are for everyone. If you have accessibility questions or concerns, please call 540-862-8114 or email Hannah.Johnson@dcr.virginia.gov.
