Help Protect Hemlock Trees

April 22, 2026. 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.

Join us this Earth Day at Douthat State Park to make a lasting impact on our forest ecosystem. Volunteers will help protect Eastern Hemlock trees from the invasive Hemlock Woolly Adelgid, a pest that threatens these iconic trees.

What to Expect:

-A brief introduction from a park ranger about invasive species, the treatment process, and the importance of Eastern Hemlocks

-Hands-on work raking leaves and clearing debris around the base of hemlock trees

-The ranger will apply a safe pesticide to treat the trees

-Time to enjoy the beauty of Douthat State Park after the event

What to Bring:

-Long pants

-Sturdy, closed-toed shoes

-Work gloves

-A refillable water bottle

In celebration of Earth Day on April 22, Virginia State Parks offers a range of special events and activities highlighting the importance of conservation and sustainability. Visitors are invited to participate in educational programs, guided nature walks, wildlife observation, tree plantings and service projects to help preserve the beauty and biodiversity of the state’s 44 parks.
