Whether you're fascinated or a little rattled, snakes are a vital part of healthy ecosystems, and they’re not as scary as they seem. In this interactive program, we’ll explore the types of snakes you might encounter at Douthat State Park, including how to tell the difference between venomous and non-venomous species. Learn why snakes are important, how they help control rodent populations, and why they deserve our respect, not our fear. You'll also have the chance to meet our animal ambassador, Ranger Ziggy the Eastern Ratsnake.
The “tales” part? Almost everyone has a snake story, and we’d love to hear yours! We'll also have hands-on activities, including a chance to touch a real snake shed and create your own slithery snake craft to take home.
Parks are for everyone. If you have accessibility questions or concerns, please call 540-862-8114 or email Hannah.Johnson@dcr.virginia.gov.
