Discovery Hike: Nature in Transition

Where

Program Location: Camp Store Parking Area
Main Park Address: Douthat State Park, 14239 Douthat State Park Rd., Millboro, VA 24460.

When

March 14, 2026. 10:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m.

Join us for a guided Discovery Hike along the Buck Lick Trail and experience March—a month of transformation. Early in the month, the forest still feels like winter, but as days lengthen, plants begin to wake: buds swell, mosses brighten, and the first wildflowers push through last year’s leaves.

We’ll explore how plants survive the cold and prepare for spring’s burst of growth. Each week brings new changes, so even on the same trail, you’ll notice something different each time—fresh shoots, unfolding leaves, and early blooms.

While plants take center stage, we’ll also watch for animal signs like tracks, returning birds, and squirrels at work. Together, these clues tell the story of a forest shifting from winter’s stillness to spring’s renewal.

Curious about nature’s seasonal rhythms? This hike offers a refreshing and educational experience for all ages. Come see what’s emerging.

Please meet at the Camp Store Parking Lot. The trail is less than half a mile long and follows easy but uneven terrain.

Parks are for everyone. If you have accessibility questions or concerns, please call 540-862-8114 or email Hannah.Johnson@dcr.virginia.gov.
