Vernal Pool Exploration

Location of Widewater State Park in Virginia

Where

Program Location: Visitor Center
Main Park Address: Widewater State Park, 101 Widewater State Park Road, Stafford, VA 22554.

When

April 11, 2026. 2:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m.

Vernal pools are shallow, temporary pools that typically form in early spring. Due to their temporary nature, these pools rarely hold fish, making it the perfect place for young amphibians to grow without many predators. Join a ranger as we explore this delicate ecosystem and identify the multitude of species that rely on it. Clean, closed-toed shoes are required for this program, and be sure to wear weather-appropriate clothing. Participants will meet at the Visitor Center prior to the program.

Never attempt to find or explore a vernal pool without a ranger. Our rangers are equipped with proper training and permits to handle sensitive wildlife and guide others through this fragile ecosystem.

In case in inclement weather, please check this page prior to coming to the parkCancellations will be posted by close of business the day before the program.
