Birding for Science!

Location of Powhatan State Park in Virginia

Where

Program Location: Trailhead/Equestrian Parking Lot
Main Park Address: Powhatan State Park, 4616 Powhatan State Park Rd., Powhatan, VA 23139.

When

April 19, 2026. 10:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m.

Join fellow nature-lovers to help safe-guard our native birds during Earth Week! On this guided birding walk, you will be encouraged to practice identification and record the species observed using the eBird app by the Cornell Lab. The data we gather will contribute to a world-wide database that fuels conservation, science, and education! The app is free to download, and is totally optional for the program. Everyone is welcome to come along and participate in whatever way they are comfortable.

The park ranger will guide you alongside meadow and forest to discover who is out and about. In mid-spring, we have a good chance at seeing colorful new arrivals from Central or South America! We'll also surely see some year-round residents, while the winter migrants have likely flown back to their summer home up north.

Bring binoculars if you have them. If not, we do have a few pairs of binoculars that can be borrowed. See attached file for a bird checklist to print at home. The walk will be up to one mile depending on the abilities of the group. We will move at an easy pace on moderate terrain. The trail can be muddy at times, so please wear comfortable shoes that you don't mind getting dirty.

Register here to let us know you're coming. While not required for this program, it is recommended! If you register, we will be able to contact you if the program is cancelled due to weather or other unforeseen circumstances.
