Nature Journaling: Pollinators

Location of Powhatan State Park in Virginia

Where

Program Location: Shelter 1 (near playground)
Main Park Address: Powhatan State Park, 4616 Powhatan State Park Rd., Powhatan, VA 23139.

When

June 6, 2026. 1:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m.

Teens and adults are invited to slow down, step outside, and discover how nature journaling can change the way you notice the world around you. This flexible practice of writing and drawing can improve focus, observation skills, memory, deepen curiosity, and help you connect to the natural world. Participants will be guided through easy, curiosity-driven activities that encourage looking closely, wondering freely, and recording observations in a journal. Master Naturalist and educator Mary Larson leads the monthly workshop, which features a new seasonal subject each month.

June's Theme: Pollinators
You'll pay special attention to the amazing variety of native butterflies, bees, and other winged creatures as well as the plants that they pollinate. We recommend joining the complimentary pollinator habitat-themed hike at 9 a.m. before the workshop: Guided Hike: Pollinator Habitats.

What To Bring: The park will provide unlined paperback sketchbooks, #2 pencils, and colored pencils. You are welcome to bring any of your own additional supplies! You may also want to bring a collapsible chair to sit on while recording your observations.

Registration Required: The cost is $5 per participant, to be paid at the park office before the program. The park office is open from 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. daily.
