Nature Journaling: Fungi

Where
Program Location: Shelter 3 (near Launch A)
Main Park Address: Powhatan State Park, 4616 Powhatan State Park Rd., Powhatan, VA 23139.
When
May 2, 2026. 1:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m.
Teens and adults are invited to slow down, step outside, and discover how nature journaling can change the way you notice the world around you. This flexible practice of writing and drawing can improve focus, observation skills, memory, deepen curiosity, and help you connect to the natural world. Participants will be guided through easy, curiosity-driven activities that encourage looking closely, wondering freely, and recording observations in a journal. Master Naturalist and educator Mary Larson leads the monthly workshop, which features a new seasonal subject each month.
May's Theme: Fungi
You'll pay special attention to the strangely beautiful world of mushrooms and other fungi. We also encourage you to join the complimentary fungi-themed Fungus Amongus guided walk at 10 a.m. before the workshop!
What To Bring: The park will provide unlined paperback sketchbooks, #2 pencils, and colored pencils. You are welcome to bring any of your own additional supplies! You may also want to bring a collapsible chair to sit on while recording your observations.
Registration Required: The cost is $5 per participant, to be paid at the park office before the program. The park office is open from 9am-4pm daily.
