Hike & Help the Riverine Forest

Where
Program Location: Shelter 3 (near Launch A)
Main Park Address: Powhatan State Park, 4616 Powhatan State Park Rd., Powhatan, VA 23139.
When
May 2, 2026. 9:00 a.m. - 10:00 a.m.
Enjoy the clean fresh air and beautiful views provided by the park's riverside forest, and help clean it up along the way! As you walk, you'll learn about the wonderful variety of moisture-loving plants that inhabit the floodplain forest and how they all work together to keep the river ecosystem healthy. By keeping the James River healthy, they also contribute to the health of the Chesapeake Bay, the Atlantic Ocean, and all the humans along the way. To show our gratitude and support, we will pick up any trash we find along the trail and may pause to remove invasive plant species as well.
The guided walk will be about 1.5 miles along River Trail, which is mostly flat and shaded. We recommend wearing close-toed shoes and bringing water. Gloves and trash bags will be provided.
Please register to let us know you're coming. While not required for this program, it is recommended! If you register, we will be able to contact you if the program is cancelled due to weather or other unforeseen circumstances.
About Clean the Bay Day
Each year Virginia State Parks participates in the Chesapeake Bay Foundation’s Clean the Bay Day, an event dedicated to protecting and preserving the Chesapeake Bay watershed. Park visitors are invited to join a clean-up to help remove litter, debris and pollution from rivers, streams and shorelines that feed into the Bay, contributing to the health of the Bay’s ecosystem and ensuring cleaner water and safer habitats for wildlife.
