Join Virginia Master Naturalist Dr. Scott Barboza for a geology walk at Sky Meadows State Park. During this two-hour 1.5 mile excursion, you’ll explore outcrops and vistas that reveal the mysterious supercontinent Rodinia, the ancient Grenville Mountains, and the story of how Virginia was formed. Learn about the engines of plate tectonics and discover how massive collisions and volcanic eruptions gave birth to the oldest rocks in the Commonwealth. Take in a few stories of the motherland- the birthplace of our rocks - that reveal how life, air, and land have changed since our land's earliest days. He looks forward to sharing with you the amazing birth of a new world as revealed by the rocks and scenic places of Sky Meadows State Park. The program will begin at the Carriage Barn, followed by hikes to various rock outcrops culminating at the Lower Piedmont Overlook. This is a moderate walk with a steep uphill section.
