GREEN BAY, VA – Celebrate Juneteenth and the history of Twin Lakes State Park on June 17.
Juneteenth is a federal holiday that commemorates the freedom of enslaved African American people. Twin Lakes State Park’s Juneteenth event will have staff and guest speakers in attendance to discuss the history of the area as well as honor the culture and highlight the importance of bringing the community together.
The two lake parks operated as racially segregated parks until the early 1960s. In 1976, the parks merged, and the site was renamed Twin Lakes State Park in 1986.
“We want to share our park’s history by celebrating how far we’ve come since the park originally opened,” said Twin Lakes State Park Manager Kevin Faubion. “Guests will be able to experience life around Prince Edward Lake, the site of historic Prince Edward State Park, in celebration of freedom. There will be gospel music and African drumming that will surely get the crowd moving and feeling good.”
Historic Prince Edward Lake will come alive again for this event and will include rhythmic music, delicious food, fun games and knowledgeable speakers. Photos from the park’s heyday will be on display, and those who have memories of the lake are invited to share them.
The celebration runs from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m., rain or shine.
