Natural Tunnel State Park hosts special astronomy events

DUFFIELD, Va. – Natural Tunnel State Park invites stargazers and astronomy enthusiasts of all ages to embark on an unforgettable celestial journey during its upcoming astronomy events. Set against the breathtaking backdrop of Virginia's natural beauty, these programs promise an evening of wonder and discovery under the vast expanse of the night sky.

On May 11, the park will extend its public hours for the Astronomy Star Party, offering participants the chance to marvel at the wonders of the universe from 8 to 11 p.m. at the gazebo. The park will not provide stargazing equipment for the star party, so attendees are invited to bring their telescopes, binoculars, etc.

In celebration of International Astronomy Day on May 18, Natural Tunnel is hosting a solar viewing program from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the picnic area. Astronomy volunteers will be at the park to share the wonders of the sun, solar system and much more. They’ll have telescopes with solar filters on hand for safe viewing. Then, from 8:15 to 11 p.m., the volunteers will be at the gazebo with their telescopes for nighttime galaxy exploration.

Admission to the three astronomy programs is free; however, the standard parking fee is required for the International Astronomy Day Solar Viewing event. Guests are encouraged to bring blankets and chairs. In the event of inclement weather, some activities may be subject to cancellation or rescheduling.
