SITE DESCRIPTION:
Dundas Granite Flatrock Natural Area Preserve protects a geological rarity in the Virginia Piedmont: an exposed, gently sloping, granite rock outcrop characterized by abundant mosses and lichens, but sparse vascular plant growth. While more frequent in Georgia and North Carolina to the south, only about a dozen such Granitic Flatrocks occur in the Commonwealth - all within 20 miles of this preserve. Privately owned and out of site from nearby roads, Dundas Granite Flatrock remains in near pristine condition. In addition to the rare Granitic Flatrock natural community, this preserve also supports globally rare Piedmont Hardpan Forest and small populations of two rare plants - Small's purslane (Portulaca smallii) and granite flatsedge (Cyperus granitophilus).
VISITATION:
This privately owned preserve has no public access facilities and is not open to the public. Guided field trips to the preserve may be arranged by contacting DCR
