Course Description:
This module will examine flood risk and floodplain management in Virginia. We will begin with a brief discussion of the history of FEMA’s National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) and DCR’s Floodplain Program. We will then explore how the NFIP is implemented on the local level using Flood Insurance Rate Maps, land use development regulations, hazard mitigation plans, and other planning tools. We will also identify resources available, such as online flood mapping tools, GIS data, non-regulatory products, and other Virginia specific resources.
