Flood Resilience Funding
Commonwealth Resilience Planning Principles
Regardless of region, the funding will be guided by the following principles detailed in the Coastal Resilience Master Planning Framework:
- Acknowledge the consequences of climate change, and base decision making on the best available science.
- Identify and address socioeconomic inequities and work to enhance equity through adaptation and protection efforts for low-income and underserved communities.
- Utilize community and regional scale planning to the maximum extent possible, seeking region-specific approaches tailored to the needs of individual communities.
- Understand fiscal realities and focus on the most cost-effective solutions for the protection and adaptation of our communities, businesses, and public infrastructure. The solutions will, to the extent possible, prioritize effective natural solutions.
- Recognize the importance of protecting and enhancing nature-based solutions in all regions, natural coastal barriers, and fish and wildlife habitat by prioritizing nature-based solutions.
Additionally, the Chief Resilience Officer has identified the following principles to guide the Commonwealth’s approach to flood resilience:
- We are committed to addressing challenges relating to flooding and resiliency.
- We must address these challenges with programs that work for all impacted parts of Virginia.
- The programs we implement must work together as parts of comprehensive, cohesive plans.
- These programs and plans must be developed and implemented with transparency and input from the public.
